Pre-conference workshops will be held on Monday 15 April 2024 at various locations and times in the metropolitan Canberra area.

Workshops are optional extras at the prices listed below.  You may book for a workshop at the time of registering for the conference or you may return to your Currinda profile later to add a workshop to your conference registration.

Workshop 1: Modelling ember transport and impacts: exploring the state of the science

Sponsored and presented by UNSW

9AM – 4PM (Full day workshop)

Location:  National Press Club – 16 National Circuit, Barton, ACT

Morning tea and lunch provided.

This workshop will bring together researchers and interested end-users to communicate recent advances in modelling embers at the wildland-urban interface, and to discuss emerging state-of-the-art ember research including new avenues of inquiry.

Workshop 2: The future of fire-weather intelligence

Presented by Bureau of Meteorology

Full day workshop

Hotel Kurrajong Canberra, 8 National Circuit, Barton ACT

Participants will develop a ~10+ year strategy for the national fire weather intelligence capability that:
  • Will be required to predict and respond to future events in novel climate regimes
  • Maximises the opportunities presented by current and emerging technologies
  • Recognises that skilled practitioners and teams are integral to emergency management
  • Aims to ensure that community needs for accurate targeted messaging are met.

Field Trips

Field trips will be held on Friday 19 April 2024 with buses leaving from and returning to the Realm Hotel.

Field Trip 1: CSIRO National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory Tour and Demonstration Burn

Presented by CSIRO

9.30AM – 12PM (Half day field trip)

Transport from the Realm Hotel and morning tea provided.

Location:  CSIRO National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory

The CSIRO National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory is home to its Pyrotron and its 11 metre-tall vertical wind tunnel.
 

$110 per person

Field Trip 2: Prescribed burning tour of the ACT

Presented by ACT Parks and Conservation Service

8AM – 3PM (Full day field trip)

Transport from the Realm Hotel, morning tea and lunch provided.

$140 per person

Participant numbers for workshops and field trips are limited.

The conference reserves the right to cancel any workshop or field trip that does not reach its minimum number of participants.
